Amandel, dalam bahasa kedokteran biasa disebut tonsil, berfungsi untuk menghasilkan limfosit yaitu sejenis sel darah putih yang bertugas membunuh kuman yang masuk ke dalam badan melalui mulut. apabila tonsil meradang maka tonsil dapat membengkak, merah dan penderita merasa gatal, sakit kerongkongan, sakit menelan, kadang-kadang muntah.
Peradangan tonsil membuat anak demam, sakit kepala, muntah-muntah, sakit perut, lemas dan tidak bersemangat. Pembesaran tonsil yang terlalu besar dapat menghalangi jalan pernafasan. Kelenjar di bawah dagu dapat pula membesar. Kelenjar pada dinding kerongkongan disebut adenoid. Biasanya apabila amandel meradang adenoid pun ikut meradang.
Peradangan ini dapat disebabkan kuman dan virus yang masuk ke dalam mulut. Peradangan ini dapat diobati dengan antibiotik. Namun apabila terjadi berulang-ulang perlu dilakukan operasi.

Rickets
Rickets is a disease of growing bone that is unique to children and adolescents. It is caused by a failure of osteoid to calcify in a growing person. Failure of osteoid to calcify in adults is called osteomalacia. Vitamin D deficiency rickets occurs when the metabolites of vitamin D are deficient. Less commonly, a dietary deficiency of calcium or phosphorus may also produce rickets. Vitamin D-3 (cholecalciferol) is formed in the skin from a derivative of cholesterol under the stimulus of ultraviolet-B light. Ultraviolet light or cod liver oil was the only significant source of vitamin D until early in the 20th century when ergosterol (vitamin D-2) was synthesized from irradiated plant steroids.
Pathophysiology
Cholecalciferol (ie, vitamin D-3) is formed in the skin from 5-dihydrotachysterol. This steroid undergoes hydroxylation in 2 steps. The first hydroxylation occurs at position 25 in the liver, producing calcidiol (25-hydroxycholecalciferol), which circulates in the plasma as the most abundant of the vitamin D metabolites and is thought to be a good indicator of overall vitamin D status. The second hydroxylation step occurs in the kidney at the 1 position, where it undergoes hydroxylation to the active metabolite calcitriol (1,25-dihydroxycholecalciferol). This cholecalciferol is not technically a vitamin but a hormone.
Calcitriol acts at 3 known sites to tightly regulate calcium metabolism. Calcitriol promotes absorption of calcium and phosphorus from the intestine, increases reabsorption of phosphate in the kidney, and acts on bone to release calcium and phosphate. Calcitriol may also directly facilitate calcification. These actions increase the concentrations of calcium and phosphorus in extracellular fluid. The increase of calcium and phosphorus in extracellular fluid, in turn, leads to the calcification of osteoid, primarily at the metaphyseal growing ends of bones but also throughout all osteoid in the skeleton. Parathyroid hormone facilitates the 1-hydroxylation step in vitamin D metabolism.
In the vitamin D deficiency state, hypocalcemia develops, which stimulates excess parathyroid hormone, which stimulates renal phosphorus loss, further reducing deposition of calcium in the bone. Excess parathyroid hormone also produces changes in the bone similar to those occurring in hyperparathyroidism. Early in the course of rickets, the calcium concentration in the serum decreases. After the parathyroid response, the calcium concentration usually returns to the reference range, though phosphorus levels remain low. Alkaline phosphatase, which is produced by overactive osteoblast cells, leaks to the extracellular fluids so that its concentration rises to anywhere from moderate elevation to very high levels.
Intestinal malabsorption of fat and diseases of the liver or kidney may produce the clinical and secondary biochemical picture of nutritional rickets. Anticonvulsant drugs (eg, phenobarbital, phenytoin) accelerate metabolism of calcidiol, which may lead to insufficiency and rickets, particularly in children who are kept indoors in institutions.

Defisiensi Vitamin B1
Defisiensi vitamin B1 (Thiamin) adalah suatu sindrom yang muncul sebagai hasil dari suatu keparahan, kekurangan thiamin yang berkepanjangan pada makanan. Ini dapat terjadi saat diet hanya terdiri dari beras putih yang digiling, beras yang terlalu bersih dicuci, dan tepung terigu atau gandum. Defisiensi thiamin yang terjadi selama rentang waktu 2-3 bulan dapat menyebabkan berbagai gangguan hingga kematian.

Posisi Tidur yang Baik untuk Kesehatan
Kebiasaan tidur ternyata dapat mempengaruhi kecantikan dan kesehatan wajah. Untuk menjaga tubuh tetap bugar saat bangun tidur sebaiknya mulailah untuk merubah kebiasaan posisi tidur anda.
Mulailah untuk tidur dengan posisi telentang lurus dan gunakan bantal yang tidak terlalu tinggi. Posisi tidur ini dianggap paling sempurna karena badan berada dalam posisi rileks. Tubuh anda juga tidak melengkung sehingga dapat mengganggu jantung dan sirkulasi darah.
Posisi tidur miring sebenarnya tidak buruk tetapi sebaiknya jangan terus menerus dalam kondisi itu. Posisi miring yang baik adalah miring ke kanan karena dianggap oleh para dokter posisi ini tidak menekan aliran pada jantung anda.

DEFISIENSI BESI
Pendahuluan
Defisiensi besi adalah kekurangan besi dalam tubuh karena kosongnya cadangan besi yang disebabkan oleh beberapa faktor. Beberapa faktor yang berperan diantaranya kehilangan besi sebagai akibat pendarahan, kurangnya asupan akibat taraf sosial ekonomi, kebutuhan yang meningkat seperti pada wanita hamil, serta gangguan penyerapan besi di dalam tubuh akibat kesalahan kombinasi jenis asupan.
Setiap hari tubuh membutuhkan 20-25 mg besi untuk eritropoesis dimana 95% besi berasal dari perputaran daur eritrosit dan katabolisme hemoglobin. Sehingga hanya sekitar 1 mg besi setiap hari (5% dari daur eritrosit) yang dibutuhkan dari luar tubuh baik yang berasal dari protein hewani (besi heme) ataupun dari tumbuh-tumbuhan (besi nonheme). Kebutuhan ini dapat berbeda karena faktor usia dan jenis kelamin.
Jika kebutuhan besi tiap harinya dipenuhi, maka besi sebagai mikronutrien dan trace element dalam tubuh dapat menjalankan fungsi untuk mensintesis hemoglobin, mioglobin, dan beberapa enzim seperti sitokrom di dalam tubuh manusia. Apabila kebutuhan besi dalam tubuh tidak tercukupi dan tidak segera diatasi, maka manifestasi klinis yang paling awal dan sering terjadi adalah Anemia Defisiensi Besi (ADB). Jenis anemia karena penyakit kronis ataupun Ressless Leg Syndrome (RLS) juga dilaporkan, namun patofisiologinya tidak diketahui dengan jelas
ADB paling sering terjadi di negara berkembang seperti Indonesia. Hal ini terkait dengan taraf ekonomi yang relative rendah, kurangnya asupan protein hewani, dan investasi parasit pada daerah endemik. Prevalensi ADB pada laki-laki 16-50%, 25-84% pada wanita tak hamil, 46-92% pada wanita hamil yang relatif rendah pada trimester I dan kemudian meningkat pada trimester II. Sekitar 50% ADB pada wanita hamil terjadi setelah kehamilan 25 minggu. Terdapat penelitian yang melaporkan sejumlah 24% dari penderita ADB menunjukkan gejala RLS.
Oleh karena tingginya insiden defisiensi besi di Indonesia, di bab selanjutnya akan dibahas mengenai patofisiologi, gambaran klinis, penilaian secara nutrisional, cara mendiagnosis serta manajemen untuk mengurangi angka insiden serta menurunkan mortalitas dan morbiditas akibat defisiensi besi.

Di luar negeri, setelah kulit mati dibuang langsung ditanam kulit sementara berupa kulit cadaver (mayat) atau kulit babi. Sementara itu, kulit penderita diambil sedikit untuk dibiakkan lewat teknik kultur jaringan (tissue culture).

Morfin Percepat Penyebaran Sel Tumor
KOMPAS.com - Hasil dua buah studi terbaru menambah bukti yang menyebutkan morfin dan madat yang berbasis penghilang rasa sakit (painkiller) yang biasa dipakai sebagai anastesi, mempercepat pertumbuhan dan penyebaran sel kanker, terutama pada pasien kanker.
Menurut Patrick A.Singleton, asisten profesor pengobatan dari Universitas Chicago, morfin bisa meningkatkan proliferasi (perkembangbiakan) sel tumor, menghambat sistem imun, serta memicu pertumbuhan pembuluh darah baru (angiogenesis) yang memberi makan tumor dan menekan fungsi pertahanan tubuh.
"Bila hasil klinik ini terbukti, mungkin akan ada perubahan besar dalam penggunaan anastesi untuk prosedur operasi pada pasien kanker. Mungkin juga perlu dicari obat-obatan baru," kata Singleton.
Pada pasien kanker yang menjalan operasi diketahui terjadi penurunan fungsi sistem pertahanan tubuh sehingga sel tumor makin mudah menginvasi jaringan dan menyebar ke bagian tubuh lain.
Untuk mencegah hal tersebut para peneliti melakukan jicoba terhadap mencit diketahui mencit yang tidak diberi reseptor morfin. Ternyata mencit itu tidak mengalami pertumbuhan tumor saat disuntik dengan sel kanker paru. Para peneliti juga menemukan bahwa methylnaltrexone bisa mengurangi profilerasi kanker sel hingga 90 persen.
Menurut Patrick A.Singleton, asisten profesor pengobatan dari Universitas Chicago, morfin bisa meningkatkan proliferasi (perkembangbiakan) sel tumor, menghambat sistem imun, serta memicu pertumbuhan pembuluh darah baru (angiogenesis) yang memberi makan tumor dan menekan fungsi pertahanan tubuh.
"Bila hasil klinik ini terbukti, mungkin akan ada perubahan besar dalam penggunaan anastesi untuk prosedur operasi pada pasien kanker. Mungkin juga perlu dicari obat-obatan baru," kata Singleton.
Pada pasien kanker yang menjalan operasi diketahui terjadi penurunan fungsi sistem pertahanan tubuh sehingga sel tumor makin mudah menginvasi jaringan dan menyebar ke bagian tubuh lain.
Untuk mencegah hal tersebut para peneliti melakukan jicoba terhadap mencit diketahui mencit yang tidak diberi reseptor morfin. Texting long messages can be a pain in the neck — literally.
The repetitive action of working your fingers across the number pad of your cell phone can cause some of the same chronic pain problems previously confined to those who'd spent a lifetime typing, a new study suggests.
The possible connection is particularly worrying given how much teens and young adults — and increasingly those in professional settings — are texting nowadays, said Judith Gold of Temple University in Philadelphia, who carried out one of the first studies on the potential connection.
Text messaging is a fairly new technology, Gold says, so this is a new area of research for those who study ergonomics. But the links between carpal tunnel syndrome, bursitis, and tendonitis for office workers and others who spend much of their day typing are firmly established, and "given the similarities in body position, findings from research on overuse injuries from computers could be applicable" to texting, Gold said.
"The way the body is positioned for texting – stationary shoulders and back with rapidly moving fingers – is similar to the position for typing on a computer," Gold explained.
Previous research has found pain in the elbow associated with too much thumb texting. Doctors' case reports have also referenced individual instances of "texting tendonitis" and "Blackberry thumb," Gold said.
To look for a broader link between texting and chronic pain, Gold and her colleagues sent a questionnaire to 138 college students asking them to report the number of text messages they sent per day (in four categories: 0, 1-10, 11-20, 21+ messages) and to point out any discomfort they felt on a body map.
The research showed an association between number of text messages sent per day and shoulder discomfort. The effect seemed to be particularly pronounced in males, though Gold says she doesn't know why that would be.
"What we've seen so far is very similar to what we see with office workers who've spent most of their time at a computer," Gold said.
However, Gold's study did not control for the amount of time the people surveyed also spent typing on computers, which could be affecting the results. Gold says that more research needs to be done to control for computer use and confirm the texting-pain connection.
